ACTIVISM IDEAS:

This year we are continuing with the theme of “Toxic Movies” which lends itself to great visuals for activism. Some logos have been already developed to use or you may wish to design your own using this theme.

A photograph on this page is of a young person wearing an inexpensive disposable painters cover-up with a toxic movies logo on it. We have a gas mask on this young man but you could just use a surgical or dust mask over the mouth and nose. These are also very inexpensive. Safety goggles can also be used if they are available. Instead of cover-ups you could use tshirts that have the logo printed on them and also use a surgical mask and goggles. We suggest a bright yellow or “neon green" shirt with black letters to be highly visible.

Here are some ideas for sing this “toxic cleanup” costume:

Hold a rally or protest outside of a theater or offices that are connected with the motion picture industry with people dressed in the toxic movies theme. Have signs asking them to support the goals of smoke free movies.

If you are not comfortable with a more “activism” type of protest consider a more “passive” approach. Have several people dressed like this stand outside a local theater or in a high traffic location in the community. Depending on local laws you might be required to keep walking on the sidewalk. Walk slowing in a regular route. The key is to attract attention. Let the media know that you are doing this. Make sure that the words “Stop Toxic Movies” are large enough to read from a distance. You might want to carry signs also with your message.

Hold a press conference during the international week of action (more information on the media page) using people in this costume to present.

Make a video using characters dressed like this – maybe viewing a movie or going into a video store or theater. Use your imagination. Have a community movie night to screen this video or videos.

This concept can also be used in posters or print ads.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2008, several groups have agreed to hold demonstrations or some type of “Toxic Movies” activity in order to show solidarity. If you can plan an event for this day or at any other time during the week, please let us know so that we can maximize media coverage. Please contact Ken Dahlgren at kdahlgren@prodigy.net if you have any questions about activism ideas.
